WebJun 28, 2004 · Joseph Edward Evans (1844-1913), the fourth lighthouse keeper on Admiralty Head, replaced Laurence Nessel on November 2, 1887. Evans, a Civil War veteran, arrived with his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Henry, from two years at the Ediz Hook Light Station near Port Angeles where he had been the acting station keeper. WebThe lighthouse was electrified in 1937. In 1956, the Coast Guard intended to close the station, but retained the light when the Columbia River bar pilots protested. The light was automated in 1973. An observation deck has been built for the Coast Guard to monitor traffic and bar conditions. Ediz Hook is a 3-mile-long (4.8 km) sand spit that extends from northern shore of the Olympic Peninsula at Port Angeles in northcentral Clallam County, Washington, USA, northeasterly into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, located about 15-mile (24 km) west of the larger Dungeness Spit. It is relatively narrow at points, but broader toward the base and the northeast tip.
